Name:
Auto-Generate Item Codes

Description:
Big Business allows users to include an Item Code of up to 18 characters on the Item Card. New users coming from an older system may want to continue using the same codes, which they have memorized or are being used in printed references like price lists.

Starting from scratch, however, requires users to make up Item Codes as they go (if they choose to use Item Codes). The powerful search and sort capabilities of Big Business may prompt some users to create a special set of codes (e.g. XXXXCCSS, where XXXX is an item code, CC the color, and SS the size) to meet their needs, but many would prefer

If all that is needed is a serial number to uniquely identify an item (for price lists, etc. with many similar items), having Big Business automatically enter an Item Code would save time and prevent the user having to keep track of which number to use next. (3039)

Solution:
Big Business 2.5 adds the option to Auto-Generate Item Codes.

To have Big Business Auto-Generate Item Codes:
1. Open the Item Prefs.
2. Click on the Auto-Generate Item Code check box.
3. Enter a starting number in the Next Item Code field.
4. Save your changes by clicking the OK button.

Big Business will now assign an Item Code, in the form of a serial number, starting with the number you specified, to each new Item Card.

You can reset the Next Item Code field at any time. In doing so, keep in mind that checking for Unique Codes is a separate option. If you never reset the Next Item Code field, you are assured of unique codes, but may have gaps in series of Item Codes Assigned. The Auto-Generate Item Codes option assigns the code upon creation of the Item Card. If you Cancel a new Item Card the serial number assignment has already been incremented, which will create a gap in the sequence. If you reset the Next Customer Code field to eliminate the gap, you may create duplicates.
