Update Customers Import

Big Business 4 adds the ability to update Customers by Import.

This feature provides a convenient means to update Customer information--from a spreadsheet or other export file.

Big Business 4.2.6 adds the option to import a new Customer Code (5857)

Before using the Update Customers Import option, it is recommended that you create a backup of your data file. Not only will you have a backup in case of disaster, by shutting down Big Business you will free any locked records (e.g. open on users' screens) which otherwise might not update.

To Update Customers by import:

1. Assemble a tab-delimited text file of Customer updates including Customer Code, which is the key field used to match an existing card, and any fields to be updated.

2. From the Maintenance toolbar, select the Import tool.

3. In the dialog, select your import file, then the Update Customers import option.

4. Map the key field, Customer Code, and any fields to be updated.

5. If your import file has headers (e.g. 'Customer Code', 'Desc1') select the "Do Not Import Header' option.

6. Edit the Import Tag as necessary so you can easily find the Customers which were updated in this import.

7. Click OK to proceed with the import.

When the import file has been processed, a list of updated Customers will be displayed.

Import records for which no matching Customer Code is found are skipped, so you can import a contact manager's complete list, when only a portion are Customers. Import records that find more than one match modify the first Customer found, only, and report the problem in the error log. In other words, this import requires unique Customer Codes, and will identify duplicate Customer Codes in the error log. If error log entries are created, at the end of the import, a dialog will ask if you want to save the error log for reference.
